“smothering in an airtight cage of poverty…”

Earlier today I was fortunate enough to catch Democracy Now! where they were showing large portions from “King: A Filmed Record.”  This film was only shown once, March 24, 1970.  It has recently been released as a 2 dvd set, and as you can imagine, is filled with images, speeches, marches and words of Dr. King.

While watching I found myself moved by how -young- MLK really was and how young he looks in the early footage.  Being booked into the Montgomery Jail by the cops, I see MLK’s youth, doubt, and fear, and see him consciously put himself back into the role of “strong leader.”   Those glimpses remind me that it is people, regular people, who change the world.  No different, at core, than me or you.  They aren’t born heroes or Gods.  They are born people and become those who make a commitment, a choice, a stand, who change the world.
I believe it is good for all of us to be reminded of this.  Often we wait for someone else.  Or we put someone on a pedestal, thinking they are somehow more powerful and better than we are.  They aren’t.  They are us and we are them.  We have such rich potential, my friends!
(and yes, I clicked on “This post is super-awesome,” mainly because it’s my first blog in a LONG time!)
